The Biden administration has not previously acknowledged sending ATACMS to Ukraine, but a National Security Council spokesperson confirmed that the U.S. has provided them. The NSC spokesperson said the administration did not reveal at the time that it was sending Ukraine the long-range missiles for operational security reasons. President Joe Biden directed his national security team to send the ATACMS to Ukraine secretly, the spokesperson said. The powerful missiles have a range up to 300 kilometers (about 187 miles) and allow Ukraine to strike the Russian military throughout Crimea and in occupied parts of eastern Ukraine that had been difficult to reach.

Seoul, South Korea CNN —As tensions with North Korea spike, South Korea will hold its first nationwide civil defense drill in six years later this month, requiring most of the country’s 51 million residents to practice evacuating to shelters or underground safe spaces during the 20-minute exercise. “We expect to strengthen the response capacity of the nation through a practical drill reflecting the aspects of provocations of North Korea,” Prime Minister Han Duck-soo said in a news release this week. Many South Koreans have become resigned to the fact that much of the population would only have minutes to respond to any possible North Korean missile or airstrike. South Koreans have long become used to periods of fractious relations with the North, but the current level of tensions are especially high. Han, the South Korean prime minister, said the civil defense drill would be held in conjunction with large-scale US-South Korea military exercises that have drawn sharp criticism from Pyongyang in the past.

Kim Jong-Un showed off his arsenal, including North Korea's newest ICBM, a powerful missile that is among the most troubling. And part of the jam-packed state visit's agenda included Kim Jong Un showing off his arsenal of missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads, including its newest ballistic missile achievement. On Thursday, Kim met with Russian Minister of Defense Sergei Shoigu to discuss military and security issues, according to North Korean state media. North Korea hasn't conducted a nuclear test since 2017, so it's unclear what the priorities and timeline of their program are. It's also currently unclear whether Russia and China's visit this week could potentially conclude with a demonstration of the Hwasong-18 missile or other military assets.
